San Juan girls tennis team concludes 2021 season, looks ahead to a positive future

The 2021 San Juan High School girls tennis team concluded their season this past Friday, October 1 with a strong performance at the 3A Region 12 Championships in Sevier County, UT.

Though the team didn’t qualify any players for the state tournament, second-year head coach Ciarra Walker reports that she’s proud of her girls this season.

“[The players] all worked so hard throughout this season and I’ve seen them improve in their skills over the past couple months,” wrote Walker in an email to the San Juan Record.

“They played against some larger schools and really skilled opponents, but they did their best, had fun, and improved.”

Junior Julie McFarland led the way for the Lady Broncos this season with one win in first singles play. Junior Kamora Mitchell picked up a couple wins in second singles. And Amelia McFarland won one match in third singles.

Coach Walker wrote that she’s excited to continue moving forward with the team in the future. “I’m looking forward to next season and working with this great group of young women.

“So many of them have natural tennis talent and I’m hoping to help them refine their skills over the offseason to come back next season even better.

She explained that the team will attend some camps to get some additional training and ideas for drills that can be incorporated into practices.

With a couple girls returning as seniors next season, a big goal will be to get those players into the state tournament. Coach Walker says she will do everything in her power to help them accomplish that goal.

Congratulations to coach Ciarra Walker and the entire 2021 San Juan High School girls tennis team on an excellent 2021 season – one that sets a strong foundation for teams of the future.
