San Juan, Whitehorse teams wrestle at N. Sevier

The San Juan and Whitehorse high school wrestling teams traveled to Salina, UT this past Friday and Saturday, January 14-15 to participate in the North Sevier Invitational at North Sevier High School.

Twenty teams from around the state ranging in classification from the 4A level to 1A competed at the event. Canyon View came away with the championship, scoring 211.5 points. San Juan finished in 13th as a team with 67 points and Whitehorse came home 17th with 26 points.

A couple wrestlers led the way for the Broncos with fourth-place finishes, Deklan Helquist and Callen Burke. Three Broncos picked up seventh-place results: Chad Yellow, JD Palmer, and Taylor Black.

Also wrestling tough for San Juan were Logan Keith, Trace Bennett, and Tyler Palmer. Bronco Assistant Coach Shane Musselman reported that the team is still battling to get all their wrestlers back healthy.

Though it was a challenging week, he said, the wrestlers who were able to compete this past weekend wrestled well.

Whitehorse junior Marcus Denny wrestled all the way to the championship match at 215 pounds at the North Sevier Invite, but lost by fall to Marc Richardson of Canyon View, finishing second. Sophomores Landin Clark (144 lbs) and Lucas Collins (285) also wrestled hard for the Raiders.

All the San Juan County teams met in Monticello for the Buckaroos’ last home matches of the season on Tuesday, January 18. Monument Valley, Whitehorse, and San Juan head to Page, AZ this Friday and Saturday, January 21-22 to compete in the Sand Devil Classic.
