High school volleyball teams are winding down their regular seasons and looking ahead to state tournaments in the coming weeks.
This past week the San Juan Broncos did most of the work, playing five games in as many days. Most of those matches occurred at the Sevier Valley Tournament in Richfield Friday and Saturday, October 7-8.
But before their trip the Broncos swept Beaver in a home Region 19 matchup on October 4. They went 1-3 at the Sevier Valley Tourney, suffering losses to North Sanpete, Richfield, and North Sevier.
Their lone win was against Pine View, a straight-sets sweep. Following the weekend San Juan is 12-11 ranked tenth in the 2A RPI standings.
They conclude the regular season with back-to-back road matches against tough opponents the #6 and 14-12 Enterprise Wolves on Friday, October 14. They face the undefeated, #1-ranked Parowan Rams on October 15.
The Monticello volleyball girls suffered a straight-sets loss to the extremely tough Dove Creek Bulldogs in Dove Creek on Tuesday, October 4 but bounced back to sweep Pinnacle on Friday, October 7.
The Buckaroos were 10-9 on the season to begin the week, ranked ninth in the 1A RPI. They and the Whitehorse Raiders clashed in Montezuma Creek on Tuesday, October 11, too late for our press deadline. MHS will head to Richfield this weekend for the 1A/2A Clash at the Sevier Valley Center.
Whitehorse also swept Pinnacle this past week, on Tuesday, October 4. Then they met their closest rival, the Monument Valley Cougars in the final Battle of the Drum game of the season, barring a meeting between the two teams in the state tournament.
Like their previous meeting on September 13 the Cougars had their way with the Raiders, topping them in straight sets.
Monument Valley, the top-ranked 1A team in southeastern Utah, is 5-1 on the year, ranked seventh. Whitehorse is 18th with a 2-8 record.
The Cougars were set for the busiest week headed into this week. They closed out their season series with the Pinnacle Panthers at home on Tuesday, October 11.
They’ll host Green River on Wednesday, October 12 before heading to Richfield to join Monticello at the 1A/2A Clash at the Sevier Valley Center.
1A volleyball teams will close out their regular seasons on Tuesday, October 18 when Monument Valley visits Monticello and Whitehorse hosts Pinnacle.
