Whitehorse and Monticello face off, Monument Valley girls earn wins

The Whitehorse High School boys and girls basketball teams hosted Monticello on January 9.
The teams split the matchup with the Monticello boys defeating the Raiders and the Whitehorse girls defeating the Buckaroos.
In the boys game Monticello held an 11-7 lead after one quarter but the Raiders dominated the second quarter to take a 30-21 half-time lead.
Monticello trailed 40-33 after three quarters but put up points in the paint and at the free-throw line, outscoring the Raiders 17-5 in the final frame to earn a 50-45 win.
Monticello was led in the game by senior Mason Atwood who scored 18 points in the win. Fellow senior Curtis Bunker scored 12 points, while Traken Lee had eight. JD McDonald scored four points with Kaden Pehrson scoring three and Kooper Nielson scoring two points.
Atwood also recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds. Lee had six boards with Bunker pulling down five.
Bunker led the way recording six assists while Pehrson had five. Bunker and Pehrson each had three steals while McDonald had two.
The Raiders were led in scoring by Lyric Phillips who scored 21 points including six three-point baskets. Larenz Tsosie had 12 points with Dominic Dance adding eight. Kalin Tohonnie hit a three-point shot and Adam Joe had one point for Whitehorse.
In the girls game the Lady Raiders looked impressive, building a 30-4 first-quarter lead. The Whitehorse girls led 50-18 at halftime and had a big second half to earn a 100-28 win.
Whitehorse was led in the game by Kayla Mitchell who scored 16 points. Heidi Clark scored 14, Harmony Thomas had 13, Shunbaah Begay added 12, and Kadence Lansing had ten points.
Also scoring for the Raiders were LaMyia Benally (9), Keiarra Martin and Laila Etsitty (7), Dakotah Cly (6), Alyssa Eltsosie (4), and Kiera Chee (2).
The Monument Valley teams were also active this past week. The girls added two more wins to their already impressive record. On January 9 they beat powerhouse Rock Point 65-53.
Monument Valley was led in the game by Nevaeh Wilson who scored 25 points. Shikeeya Hudson scored 11 points. Shimequa Hudson and Malaya Blackmountain each scored seven.
Precious Bedonie scored six; Mariah Begaye added three; and Enderya Hernandez-Cipriano, Kaylisa Tome, and Shilah Williams all scored two apiece.
The Lady Cougars also earned a region victory over Pinnacle on January 13. Monument Valley built a 27-11 halftime lead and cruised to a 56-28 victory.
Blackmountain and Shikeeya Hudson led the way, scoring 11 points each. Bedonie and Shimequa Hudson scored eight points. Shaundin Blackwater scored seven points, Williams had five points, Wilson scored four, and Begaye had two points.
The Monument Valley boys team suffered losses to Rock Point 77-49 on January 9 and Green River 90-50 on January 12.
