Mrs. Jacobsen has a deep understanding of the subject of Math. This knowledge not only applies to the level she is teaching but also to the grades above and below. She understands where her students are coming from and where they are going. She employs this understanding to address the needs of students. Mrs. Jacobsen knows her students and cares deeply about their learning. She knows where they are through the use of data and observation. She addresses problems they encounter in their understanding of concepts. She takes learning seriously and is willing to do whatever it takes to help students gain mastery of concepts. She maximizes classroom time by setting up highly effective management strategies. She uses her prep time and intervention time to the utmost pulling students into her room to help them. She has high standards and helps students achieve them. She works tirelessly for students, contacting parents to address not only behavior problems, but more importantly how their student is learning. Mrs. Jacobsen sets a pattern of success that can be followed by others to improve learning of all students in all areas of the curriculum.

Kari began this year in a new position. There was no handbook to rely on or other information to draw from. Kari had to work closely with administration, teachers, parents, and office staff to make her position a success. The work Kari does is astonishing; she communicates with parents, staff and administration about students that are “red-flagged” as potential at-risk due to a number of criteria. The role she has taken on has required communication, organization and people skills. She is adept at all of these as well as taking initiative on problems that arise with the position. Looking for better ways to do things and organizing them in such a way as to best benefit students is her motivation. Kari first and foremost cares about children at ARL. She looks for the best way to help them and addresses the many needs they have whether that is finding a replacement shirt, checking on a sick child, contacting a parent in an emergency or checking grades and attendance to see if they are staying on track.
