Candidate filings for Blanding, Bluff and Monticello this week
Candidate filings for municipal elections in Blanding, Bluff and Monticello are open through June 6.
Candidates for Mayor and two council seats in all three towns will be seeking appointment to four-year terms by voters in November.
Interested candidates must file a declaration of candidacy between June 2 and June 6 at city offices.
Municipal election requirements in Utah include being an 18 year old US citizen, a resident of the town or an area annexed into the town for the 12 consecutive months immediately preceding the election, and a registered voter.
Additionally the Utah constitution states those deemed mentally incompetent, convicted of a felony or convicted of treason or crime against the elective franchise cannot run unless the right is restored.
Those council seats up for election are currently held by Cheryl Bowers and Erik Grover in Blanding; Luanne Hook and Linda Sosa in Bluff; Kevin Dunn and George Rice in Monticello.
Currently the mayors of San Juan County municipalities are Trevor Olsen in Blanding, Ann Leppanen in Bluff, and Bayley Hedglin in Monticello.
Blanding city office hours this week are Monday through Thursday 7:30 to 5:30 and from 7:30 to 11:30 am on Friday at the city offices located at 50 West 100 South. While city offices will be closed on Friday afternoon for regular services, residents can still declare candidacy at city offices by 5:00 pm on Friday.
Bluff city office hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm at the Bluff Town Offices located at 190 North 3rd East street.
Monticello city office hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm at 17 North 100 East. The city also requires a filing fee.
If needed a primary election will be held on August 12 with the municipal general elections scheduled for November 4, 2025.
