The Heart of Service Awards from City of Blanding

Some of you may remember the song, “I love those dear hearts and gentle people, who live in my hometown, because those dear hearts and gentle people, will never ever let you down.” That tribute is certainly true of Blanding, Utah.

Recently Tony and Leslie Wojcik were recognized and given “The Heart of Service Award” for initiating and completing the Veterans Memorial by the Visitors Center. They initially met with the city council August 24, 2024 and presented their plan, which became a reality when the monument was dedicated May 25, 2026. Over 100 names of local veterans are recognized.

Tony is currently the local Post Commander of the American Legion, a position he has held for almost 20 years. The monument is a wonderful addition to Blanding and a well-deserved honor for all local veterans!

Calvin Black is another Blandingite who has shown service without being asked. On any given day you might find him out hoeing weeks, picking up litter along the roadside or stopping to lend a hand to someone in need. He doesn’t wait to be asked, but when he sees a need, he quietly gets to work.

Service isn’t an occasional act, but a way of life for him. His kindness, humility and unwavering willingness to help has made our community a better place, often in ways that go unnoticed by most. The Just Serve Award was presented to Calvin Black in appreciation of his selfless service, his generous spirit, and the quiet example he sets for all of us in the community.

Another community member who serves in the Blanding Food Bank pantry is DaNeece Lyman is. She shows up ready to complete any assigned task always with a smile and an upbeat attitude. Over the past few years, she has volunteered hundreds of hours helping provide for those in need and even though she is 91 years young she still thinks of ways to help inspire and give service to others.
