Centennial events begin

The San Juan Record began the celebration of its Centennial year on April 23 at the new Hideout Community Center in Monticello. Approximately 80 local residents participated in the event.
Joel Campbell, a journalism professor at Brigham Young University, discussed the intriguing history of Marie Ogden, an early publisher and editor of the San Juan Record.
Ogden also started an early New Age religion that was based at the Home of Truth in Dry Valley, north of Monticello.
The story is full of mystery and intrigue, including an arson fire that burned down the San Juan Record building, the peculiar death of a follower of Ogden, and a national media frenzy.
The presentation was well received by the group, a number of whom shared their memories of Ogden.
Campbell reports that his research generated a large amount of interest, from participants at the event and San Juan Record readers near and far.
