CEU-SJC/USU to honor 90 grads at commencement ceremonies

The 29th annual commencement of the College of Eastern Utah-San Juan Campus in Blanding will honor 84 graduates receiving associate degrees or certificates of completion.

That number includes 30 honor and high honor graduates and 15 high school students who have completed associate degree and high school graduation requirements concurrently.

Steve Burtenshaw and Heidi Bailey were named respectively as valedictorian and salutatorian. The commencement program includes six Utah State University-San Juan graduates who will receive bachelor’s or master’s degrees.

CEU-SJC grads include six who will receive associate of applied science degrees in registered nursing and 15 who will receive certificates of completion in practical nursing.

Others being honored include 28 students who completed training in building trades and truck driving, and heavy equipment. The program begins at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 2 in the San Juan High School auditorium.

Former Miss Navajo Nation Jocelyn Billy is commencement speaker. Honorary doctorate recipients are Stephen and Sylvia Czerkas.

Jocelyn Billy is a graduate of Chinle High School and Northern Arizona University. She was crowned Miss Navajo Nation September, 2006. During and after her reign, she has continued to be an advocate for education among Native Americans. She is currently promoting a Miss Navajo Nation endowment fund to help pay for educational expenses for Navajo youth.

Others attending the commencement exercises include members of the CEU Board of Trustees, CEU President Ryan Thomas, and members of the faculty and staff.
