La Sal Jct in still for movie
DUST IN THE WIND
by Bill Boyle
The silver screen stills finds it hard to ignore the rugged beauty of San Juan County.
But a setting in a spectacular landscape does not always turn to box office gold.
Take the two eagerly anticipated movies in 2013 that were both filmed partially in San Juan County. They were also bombs at the box office.
After Earth (starring Will Smith) and Lone Ranger (starring Johnny Depp) were listed on several different lists of the Worst Movies of 2013.
But it is a new year and the crop of movies that are set to be released in 2014 also includes Transformers: Age of Extinction, a film that stopped in San Juan County during production.
In addition to filming in Monument Valley and other stunning areas, the crew filmed a brief scene at an abandoned gas station at La Sal Junction.
A still shot from the gas station scene is part of the marketing that accompanies the movie. Transformers: Age of Extinction is set to be released on June 27.
