1A state basketball matchups set for Whitehorse and Monument Valley
The state tournament wait is finally over for the Whitehorse and Monument Valley basketball teams. They are headed to Richfield, UT for the four-day event which begins with the Round of 16 on Wednesday, February 26.
The Monument Valley boys endured the most difficult path to reach this point in the tourney. They entered as the number 13 team in the 1A RPI standings and were forced to play into the second round.
The Cougars didn’t seem to mind the extra challenge though, handling the #20 Diamond Ranch Diamondbacks fairly easily this past Saturday, February 22, 74-59.
Five Monument Valley players scored in double digits in the win, including Devon Slim with 25 points, Dekiyo June with 13, Seth Sheppard and Henry Wilson with 12, and Sonny Hudson with 10.
Mekhi Tallis added two points for the Cougars. Slim was impressive from long range, with four three-pointers.
Monument Valley will play the tough #4 Wendover Wildcats in their second round matchup at Richfield High School (RHS) Wednesday. It’s the first game of the day, tipping at 10 a.m.
All three of the other San Juan County 1A teams enjoyed first-round byes. The #2 Whitehorse girls face #18 Intermountain Christian in their Round of 16 contest at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Sevier Valley Center (SVC).
The #10 Whitehorse boys get #7 Piute at RHS at 5:30 p.m. And the #3 Monument Valley girls will take on #14 Pinnacle for the third time this season at 7 p.m. at SVC. The Lady Cougars beat the Lady Panthers easily on January 25 and February 8.
