San Juan student athletes receive Academic All-State honors

An impressive 6 high school student athletes representing San Juan High recently earned Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) Academic All-State honors for the 2024-2025 winter and spring sports seasons.
To qualify for Academic All-State nominations, student athletes are required to be seniors with a 4.0 cumulative, non-weighted grade point average (or meet an index score – viewable at uhsaa.org) and be a contributing member of a varsity team.
The UHSAA has presented the Academic All-State Award for 42 years, recognizing students who excel in the classroom as well as in athletic competition. Individuals are selected for the award on the basis of their athletic ability and academic proficiency.
With over 100,000 students participating in high school activities, the Academic All-State Award is the most prestigious honor the UHSAA presents to senior students.
Congratulations to these excellent student athletes for their hard work and dedication in both scholastic and athletic pursuits. The San Juan Record is proud to present a profile of each of the honored individuals featuring a photo and comments from their respective coaches.

Head Track Coach Samantha Pemberton: “Savannah is an exceptional student, athlete, and school community member. She has maintained a 4.0 GPA while taking advanced and numerous extra classes, including nine college courses during high school. Savannah plans to study pre-med at the University of Utah in the fall. Over the past two summers, she has participated in humanitarian trips to Peru and Brazil, helping build schools and serve local communities.
“Savannah is a four-year track participant and state medalist in three of those years. She is the back-to-back 2024 and 2025 2A state discus champion and a five-time state medalist across both discus and shot put. Savannah is also an accomplished violinist, having played in orchestra before moving to Blanding prior to her freshman year. She is fluent in Mandarin Chinese, having attended a dual immersion school from first through eighth grade. We’re incredibly proud of Savannah. Her grit, kindness, and determination inspire us.”

Sadie Cosby

softball

Head Coach Mike Bowers: “Sadie has been a four-year starter tor San Juan softball. She is bright, dedicated, and the ultimate team player. She worked equally hard in school and on the field. Softball didn’t come easy for Sadie. What we witnessed during her four years was a result of many hours of work outside the softball season. I can’t wait to see what Sadie does in life. With the intelligence, desire, and work ethic Sadie possesses I have no doubt she will conquer any obstacles placed before her in the future.”

Macee Palmer
San Juan High School
girls basketball

Head Coach Laura Stearns: “It was no surprise to me that Macee was selected for Academic All-State. She is a student-athlete who works hard on and off the court whether it is in her studies or other sports she’s involved in. Macee’s teammates loved having her on their team as she is positive and encouraging to all.”

Cohen Lyman
San Juan High School
Boy soccer

Head Coach Jay Jones: “Cohen is a great athlete and student. He was a captain on our soccer team.  He played defense and excelled at it this year. He was able to improve every year that he played. With his positive attitude, he was able to do well in every game he played and help inspire his teammates to play hard and work together.
“Cohen also made it clear how important education was for him. He was a great student and did well at everything he put his mind to learning. We are excited to see how the next chapter in his life goes.”

Corbyn Laws
San Juan High School
boys soccer

Head Coach Jay Jones: “Corbin worked every year to really improve and get better with his shooting and passing in soccer. He was a captain on our team. Being one of the fastest on the team, he was crucial in our defense as he was able to catch many of our opponents’ attacks and stop them.
“Corbin also had a very competitive nature and this helped encourage his teammates to not give up. He has great determination and a strong work ethic. He will do great in whatever he does in life.”

Spencer Gosney
San Juan High School
boys tennis

Head Coach Casey Olsen: “I have known Spencer for three years. I got to know him first as his teacher in my tenth grade World Civilizations Class. Then I got to know him as a neighbor. Finally I got to know Spencer as an athlete.
“In all aspects of his life, Spencer strives for greatness – not to appear great, but to actually be great. He has a lot to be proud of, but he works hard and stays humble. Seeing him grow as an athlete and as a person over the three years I have known him has been exciting.
“Spencer makes everybody around him feel valued, on and off the court. He is polite and respectful, and he is very good at easing tension. He can make his opponents smile, and he can make his teammates laugh. He is a good example to them and a good example to me. He is a good example of what it means to ‘join the herd’ and be a San Juan Bronco.”
