Attendance Matters in San Juan School District

Did you know that attendance is the number one predictor of dropout and graduation rates?
Students should miss no more than 9 days of school each year to stay engaged, successful and on track for graduation. Frequent absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with school work, dealing with a challenge or facing some other difficulty.
By 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of high school. By 9th grade, attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores. Missing 10%, or 2 days a month, over the course of the school year, can affect a student’s academic success.
This year, schools in the San Juan School District are increasing communication to parents and students around the importance of attendance - a critical indicator of success.
Attending school every day helps our students build a solid foundation for their future in school and in life.
There are unavoidable illnesses or other times when a student should remain at home.
We also recognize that absences add up quickly, and that “showing up” is critical to a student’s success in school and in life.
San Juan School District’s strategy includes district and school-level attendance management systems that carefully tracks attendance and ensures that parents are notified in a timely and consistent manner.
Parents may receive a phone call from a teacher, administrator, counselor or other school personnel. Parents may receive a letter regarding attendance in the mail.
These notifications are to bring awareness of how much school has been missed this school year. We pledge to partner with parents to find solutions and resources to support all students.
Our goal is to connect with parents quickly so that we can assist in removing any barriers that families face in getting students to school on time, every day and staying engaged in school all day.
Teachers are working to ensure that time in class is meaningful and productive every day.
We are committed to achieving our attendance goals and supporting San Juan School District families. Together, let’s create a culture of showing up, and valuing attendance - all day, every day.
