San Juan High Sterling Scholars 2024
One San Juan high student was among the winners in the 44th annual Southeastern Utah Sterling Scholar competition. An additional ten local students were named as runner-up.
The winners were announced on March 4 at a presentation at Monticello High School. A total of 63 students from Carbon, Emery, Grand, and San Juan counties competed in the event, which has been held each year since 1981.
The winner of the General Sterling Scholar is Tatum Begay from San Juan High School.
Tatum is involved in a variety of things: Drama, Band, Cross Country, FBLA, HOSA, Seminary Council, and UNITY club. Not only has he excelled in these things, but he is also a great leader. He is the student body vice president of San Juan High School, President of seminary council, President of UNITY club, and vice president of HOSA, as well as holding other leadership positions throughout high school. Even though he is deeply involved with many activities, he still is an excellent scholar. He has a cumulative 4.0 GPA for both high school and concurrent enrollment classes. Tatum’s parents are Shawn and Kristina Begay.

The Sterling Scholars event is sponsored by the Southeastern Utah Sterling Scholar Association, KSL, Deseret News, The Larry H. and Gail Miller Family Foundation and Emery Telcom.
Seniors from Whitehorse, San Juan, Monticello, Monument Valley, Green River, Navajo Mountain, Grand, Emery, and Carbon high schools can enter the competition in one of 14 categories.
Categories include Drama and Vocal Performance, Family and Consumer Science, Math, Dance, Social Science, Science, Forensics and Speech, Music, English, Skilled and Technical Science Education, Business and Marketing, Visual Arts, Computer Technology, and General Scholarship.
