Glenis Pearson
Candidate for San Juan County Treasurer
My name is Glenis Pearson. I am running for a second term as San Juan County Treasurer.
I have been a resident of San Juan County nearly all my life. I was raised in Blanding and graduated from San Juan High School. I continued my education at Brigham Young University for four years, where I majored in Home Economics Education and was a member of the Cougarettes dance team. I moved back to Monticello, married and raised my two children. Family is especially important to me.
Before my first term as County Treasurer, I worked as the Deputy Treasurer for eight (8) years. Previous to that I worked in a variety of roles, primarily at the White Mesa Mill. These included office manager, personnel clerk and accounting clerk.
I understand the work that needs to be accomplished in the Treasurer’s office and am highly committed to the job. Since being in office, we have accomplished a lot during these past four years.
We have worked on records organization as well as updating and streamlining office policies and procedures. These improvements have increased order, efficiency, accuracy, and service to benefit County citizens.
In the Treasurer’s office we basically bill, collect and distribute Real Property Taxes (including taxes on land, homes and buildings) and manage County funds.
Just a side note on how the property tax system works: The tax process might be compared to a stream. It begins in the Recorder’s office when you record your property deed. It then flows to the Assessor’s office for classification and value assessment.
Along the way, the Surveyor assists with land surveying issues. Next the tax stream flows to the Clerk’s office for application of tax rates and last to the Treasurer’s office for invoicing and collection. Tax receipts are then used to pay for services for taxpayers. Each part of the tax process is important, but we strive to keep the taxpayer foremost in mind.
I thought you might like to review where your tax dollars go: Based on 2013 tax distributions, approximately 57% goes to local schools, 28% goes to San Juan County, 7% goes to San Juan Health Service District, 4% goes to Cities and Cemeteries and 4% goes to County Water Conservancy Districts.
An important component to success is working with capable, service-oriented people. Marty Shupe has recently joined the Treasurer’s office as Deputy Treasurer, and I would like to thank her for her outstanding work. Special thanks also to other County personnel for their hard work and dedication.
I am excited to be running for a second term as Treasurer and look forward to the future in our County. All of us can work to make that future better by being involved and being part of the solutions. Interaction with citizens is the best part of my job so please let us know how we may help you. It is an honor to serve as Treasurer and I appreciate your support very much!
