Governor Herbert visits

Utah Governor Gary Herbert visited San Juan County on March 19. As part of his itinerary, he toured Blue Mountain Hospital, met with local and tribal leaders, and attended the San Juan County Republican Party organizing convention.
Governor Herbert stated that he was committed to visit every county in the state and looked forward to his visit to San Juan County.
Herbert stressed that San Juan County faces a unique set of challenges and opportunities. He praised the Blue Mountain Hospital, adding that the hospital had been a blessing to the area. The Governor added that he was pleased to hear that there may expansion opportunities for the hospital.
The Governor also mentioned the wide range of issues related to Native Americans in San Juan County. The Governor anticipates that he will sign Senate Bill 90, which addresses long-standing issues related to the Utah Navajo Trust Fund. The bill was sponsored in the Senate by Senator Van Tassell.
Tribal leaders discussed a range of issues with the Governor, including the miles of non-paved roads in the area and concerns in White Mesa about the White Mesa Mill.
Governor Herbert expressed support fort he challengers faced in rural areas and praised the work of Lt. Governor Spencer Cox, who hails from Sanpete County.
At the county Republican convention, Derryl Jack completed a two-year term as chairman of the county party. Jack will be replaced by Cody Nielson. The new party vice chairman is Vint DeGraw and Sterling Black is the new secretary / treasurer.
