KELLY LAWS

Former Councilmember, Blanding City Council
Party : Republican
Kelly Laws, a Republican, is the only candidate on the ballot in the District 2 Commissioner’s race. Democratic candidate Willie Greyeyes was taken off the ballot in May after the county clerk found “clear and convincing evidence” he did not meet residency requirements. Greyeyes has filed a lawsuit in federal court against the county actions.
Laws has been a resident of Blanding his entire life, and was a member of the city council for 18 years. He is also a field technician for Caterpillar Heavy Machinery. Laws says he wants to represent the interest of all his constituents fairly.
“The one thing I stand hard and firm on is equality,” Laws said. “We need someone that’s going to treat people fair, look out for the interests of the county, and not be swayed by outside influences. The bottom line is I want the most qualified candidate to be in office.”
Laws hopes to focus on economic growth and development, but identifies challenges to making that happen.
“I thoroughly intend on doing my best to make it equal for everybody, no matter the color of your skin, what church you go to, or where you’re ancestors come from. I don’t care if you’re rich or poor.” Laws said. “But there are a lot of inequalities that can’t be corrected because you’re dealing with a different nation in parts of our county. The things that I can change, I’ll do my best to make them happen.”
Laws says he feels compelled to run for public office again due to his longtime roots in the community.
“You either get involved in your local politics or all the sudden you live in a county you don’t know or recognize,” Laws said.
