Kendall Laws
Candidate for San Juan County Attorney
I was born and raised in San Juan County. I grew up working on my parents’ farm and playing in the mountains and desert that are our backyard in this area.
I graduated from San Juan High School and then went on a two-year LDS mission to Ukraine, where I learned Ukrainian and Russian.
After returning home, I finished my Associates degree at CEU-SJC in Blanding before attending and graduating with a bachelor’s degree from Utah State University.
I then attended and graduated with my Law Degree from the University of Wyoming College of Law and passed the Uniform Bar Exam with a score high enough to practice in any of the 14 States that administer the Uniform Bar Exam.
I have been married to my very supportive wife Emily since August 2013. She loves San Juan County almost as much as I do, and we look forward to raising a family here while doing the things that we enjoy.
When I went to law school my interest was in becoming a land use and water law attorney.
I have always been very interested in the land use issues that face the citizens of San Juan County and the County itself.
My goal was to go to law school and then return home to help in any way that I could.
While still in law school, I spent a summer working for the Weber County Attorney’s office in Ogden, Utah. That was my introduction to criminal prosecution and I fell in love.
They taught me that a great prosecutor is more interested in seeing that justice is served fairly and equally than he is with keeping track of his statistics. They also helped me gain a passion for criminal law that I didn’t think I had.
After returning to San Juan County, I opened my own office in Blanding in November where I take a wide variety of cases.
My business has gained in profits and client base every single month since the beginning and I have learned management and business skills first hand.
I have also been the Blanding City Attorney since December 2013. In that position I not only prosecute crimes like domestic violence, DUI, and theft, but I also advise the City Council, Mayor, and Administration on a variety of issues.
San Juan County is facing a lot of difficult issues. These issues will require the County Attorney to be more than merely a prosecutor. The County is in need of an Attorney who is trained and experienced in land use and administrative law in order to keep the agencies of the Federal Government honest and to protect the Constitutional rights of the County.
I am very capable of prosecuting crimes. However, even more important, I am ready, willing, and able to bring the people of San Juan County all of the legal services that other counties expect from their County Attorney.
