<i>King and I</i> begins three day run on July 30

The big day, or more specifically the big evening, is Thursday, July 30 for the cast and technical crews who have spent countless hours preparing for the moment.

The curtain goes up at 7 p.m. in the Monticello High School auditorium for the opening of The King and I, a perennial favorite since its Broadway debut on March 29, 1951.

The musical is based on Margaret Landon’s novel Anna and the King of Siam. Music is by Richard Rodgers. Lyrics and theater book are by Oscar Hammerstein II. The show won a 1952 Tony for best musical and had been on stage somewhere in the world ever since.

Patti Husted, local director, has high praise for the 67-member cast and all behind-the-scene volunteers who have donated so much time, talent, and energy to create this Monticello Community Theater production.

Husted is no slouch herself. She has been involved in theater since age four, either as an actress, a crew member, an educator, or a director.

She says, “I am excited for this show to open. Even before the curtain goes up I would give a standing ovation to all those involved. I think audiences will agree.”

Performances of The King and I are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 30; Friday, July 31; and Saturday, August 1 at the Monticello High School auditorium. Seating is reserved. To make last minute reservations, please call Laura Butler at 435-459-2008.
