Pioneer Day celebrated this week in Monticello

Residents of San Juan County will converge on Monticello this weekend to celebrate pioneering and pioneer spirit at the annual Pioneer Day celebration on July 21 to 23.

The events begin Thursday evening with an ice cream social and movie in the park.
Friday marks the beginning of the annual Blue Mountain Invitational Fastpitch Softball tournament, quilt show, Civil War demonstrations and a free concert in Veterans Memorial Park.
Saturday activities begin early with the Pioneer Day 5K run at Loyds Lake. The annual Lions Club breakfast will take place at the LDS Stake Center pavilion behind the post office, beginning at 7a.m.
The annual Pioneer Parade begins at 10:30 a.m. The route begins at the high school and loops around to Main Street and back up to the high school on Center Street.
The Grand Marshall for the 2016 parade is Vernetta Sonderegger.
The carnival begins after the parade at Veterans Memorial Park. The day concludes with fireworks at dark:30.
The annual Pioneer Day celebration is organized by the City of Monticello and San Juan Chamber of Commerce and has a host of sponsors.
