Extreme drought in SJC

The arrival of Spring marks the close of an extremely dry winter in San Juan County.
Since April, May, and June are generally the driest three months of year for the area, the situation increases the concern for the drought conditions.
The most recent U.S. Drought Monitor lists San Juan County in “Extreme Drought”.
The snow pack in area mountains continues to be significantly lower than normal. The snow pack at Camp Jackson, in the Abajo Mountains, generally peaks on March 20 at 12.1 inches of water in the snow.
In 2018, the snow pack peaked on March 6, two weeks earlier than normal, at 4.3 inches of water in the snow.
It is the lowest snow pack since 1996 and the second lowest since the Snotel reporting station was constructed in 1985.
Since the water year began on October 1, Bluff has received just .3 of an inch of precipitation. This is just seven percent of the normal amount of 4.28 inches.
