Girls hold bake sale to raise money for fire victims

When the Deer Creek fire ignited in an inhabited area of Old La Sal on July 10, news spread quickly. By Saturday July 12, the fire had destroyed several homes, vacation cabins, camper trailers and other structures.
By the time it came under containment the fire had destroyed 17,742 acres of forests and rangelands, impacting not only residents, but ranchers and their livestock and countless wildlife.
This inspired several girls from Monticello to organize and hold a bake sale to make money for the victims of the fire.
Thea Pettit (11), Megan Peterson (11), Melissa Hunt (12), Sammy Marian (12), Luci Palma (6), Linnea Sherrock (11), Maya Sherrock (9), Kaylie Palma (12) and Cora Bothwell (11) quickly got organized, set a date and committed to each bring one or two baked items to be sold. Prior to the sale, the girls made signs, and their moms promoted the special event on Facebook.
On the day of the bake sale, the Deer Creek fire was still heading east toward Colorado, but ironically, a heavy rainstorm hit Monticello! Never relenting, the girls set up the sale in Bothwell’s garage and were amazed at the turnout of customers and their generosity.
As the sale went into the late afternoon and despite the rain, the girls decided to move the bake sale to the parking lot of Blue Mountain Foods, where within two hours their items had sold out! The total funds these young doers brought in was $1,050.
The girls then contacted the president of the La Sal branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Hal Adams, who immediately thought of an individual who had lost her home in the fire and needed somewhere to live.
Joel and Marjorie Storland tracked down a used camper trailer and arranged to have it delivered for her. Repairs of the camper trailer and a space at a trailer park for two months will be taken care of as well.
In a happy meeting at the La Sal chapel, the girls presented Hal Adams and Marjorie Storland with the funds they raised in their bake sale. They expressed their gratitude for the girls’ hard work and genuine compassion for those suffering in the wake of a disaster.
The recipient of the camper trailer has expressed extreme gratitude and everyone in the La Sal area is both impressed and thankful for these determined young ladies who worked so hard and gave so much to bless their neighbors in need.
