Local earns national karate honors

Mark E. Colgan, Sensei, a resident of Monticello has come out of retirement and is making a run for the National Point Championship on the United States Karate Alliance (USKA) national circuit, earning top honors at multiple tournaments across the United States this year.
Competing in traditional kata (forms) and weapons divisions, Sensei Colgan has brought home 12 medals (8 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze) from events including the USKA World Championships in Arizona, The Louisiana State Championships, The Professional Karate Commission International Championships in Indianapolis, The Arizona State Championships, and more.
Each competition attracts skilled martial artists from across the country and internationally making these victories a significant achievement.
“I’m proud to represent our community wherever I go,” said Sensei Colgan, “Karate has taught me discipline, focus, and respect — values I bring to my teaching, competition and everyday life.”
Sensei Colgan who holds the title of “Shihan” (Master Instructor) trains at Victory Martial Arts, Monticello and has been practicing martial arts for 52 years.
He continues to train for upcoming state and national events and is preparing students for these upcoming events as well.
