Walk a portion of the Spanish Trail on May 16

A group of local residents will walk an isolated portion of the Spanish Trail on Saturday, May 16 as a part of the local America’s 250 celebration.
Meet at 8 a.m. at the San Juan County Library in Monticello.
There is no charge for the hike. Participants assume the inherent risks and uncertainties of a backcountry hike.
The hike is a little less than five miles in length and should take about three hours to complete.
While it is mostly a gradual decline, it drops about 850 feet over the course of the hike. Most of the route is relatively smooth trail, but there are some steeper sections that require care.
The hike is through isolated portions of South and East canyons. There is no vehicle access between the jumping off point and the finish.
Please be prepared for a moderate hike of five miles. Wear good shoes and bring water and a lunch or snacks. Walking sticks, a good hat, and sunscreen may be helpful.
We can help organize transport to the trail head, which is about eight miles from town. We will similarly help organize transport at the end of the hike.
No registration is required and all are invited to join, but it may be helpful to know if you intend to participate.
There will be an informational presentation about the history of the trail at the library on Friday, May 15 at 6 p.m.
