Nelson Yellowman

School board member since 2007
Nelson Yellowman is currently on the school board. He was elected in 2006.
The San Juan Record reached out to Yellowman for an interview. He said he was not available. The following quotes are excerpts from a statement Yellowman wrote for the San Juan Record in 2016.
“We have spent millions of dollars on your child’s education so they could have [an] enjoyable, safe learning environment,” Yellowman said.
In his 2016 statement, Yellowman pointed to accomplishments such as remodeling of Tse’bii’nidzisgai Elementary and new teacher housing for Monument Valley Elementary.
“Public schools operate on taxpayer, Utah State and Federal monies,” he said. “I always make sure my designated areas get equal services, no matter the funding.”
Yellowman stated he believes his success on the school board comes from an understanding of the diversity in his community.
“Having dual citizenship, United States and Navajo Nation, gives me double empowerment,” his statement reads. “This also provides me with [a] good relationship with local leaders of county government and Navajo Nation.”
Yellowman also addressed parents’ responsibilities in their childrens’ education in his statement.
“We need to visit our welcoming and warm schools and help classroom teachers as well,” he said in his statement. “Parents, you are the first teacher at home. Please continue.”
