New advisory board for economic development efforts

San Juan County is creating an economic development advisory board to help coordinate economic development efforts in the county.
The five-member board will be created in the coming weeks and will be managed through the county Economic Development office.
“We are insisting on increased economic development efforts,” said Commissioner Bruce Adams.
The new advisory board will differ from the tourism advisory board, which has been very active in the promotion of tourism efforts.
Charlie DeLorme, director of the tourism and economic development office, estimates that up to $1 million will be collected in 2016 from visitors to lodging and food establishments through the Transient Room Tax (TRT) and restaurant tax (TRCC).
These funds are used to market the county to visitors and help pay for the costs associated with the tourism efforts.
As with any advisory board, the County Commissioners will have ultimate oversight of the economic development effort.
While tourism efforts are experiencing explosive growth in some areas of the county, there is little growth in other sectors of the economy.
Commissioners hope an advisory group focused on broad economic development efforts may be able to address issues and encourage growth across the county.
The San Juan County Commission is soliciting members to serve on the Advisory Board.
They seek one individual from Monticello, one from Blanding and three county-wide “at large” members from other regions of the county.
All members of the advisory board will come from the private sector.
Commissioners state that these individuals should be San Juan County residents and possess enthusiasm for, and knowledge of, economic development, entrepreneurship, business recruitment and jobs creation.
Submit a resumé for consideration along with references and a letter of intent describing your qualifications that will lead to realistic ideas for job creation.
The deadline for applications is July 8. They should be sent to: P.O. Box 9, Monticello, UT 84535.
