New monument in Bluff to be dedicated

San Juan pioneers who came to Bluff after the original Hole in the Rock company are honored in a new monument at Bluff Fort.
The monument will be dedicated on October 10 by Elder Steven E. Snow, who is LDS Church Historian and Recorder and Executive Director of the Church History Department.
After an arduous journey, the original Hole in the Rock pioneers arrived in Bluff to settle San Juan County in 1880. They were the first permanent settlers in the area.
Beginning the next year, more settlers began to arrive through the Hole in the Rock trail and settle the area.
Steven Snow is a great-great-great-grandson of Apostle Erastus Snow, who issued the calls from Church President John Taylor to those sent to the San Juan Mission, between 1879 and 1883. Apostle Snow also visited Bluff in 1880 and again in 1884.
Elder Snow was called to serve as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 2001.
The Monument Dedication will occur on Saturday, October 10, at 11 a.m. at the Bluff Fort. The event will be preceded by a public chuck wagon breakfast beginning at 8:30 a.m. The breakfast costs $5 per plate or $15 for a family of three or more.
The dedication ceremony is free to the public. Organizers suggest that you may want to bring chairs.
