Monticello man passes away while in custody in county jail

A 39-year-old man from Monticello died while in police custody on August 8.

Gino La Giglia suffered a medical emergency while in the San Juan County jail.  San Juan County Sheriff Jason Torgerson said that the incident is under investigation and the cause of death will be determined by the state medical examiner. Torgerson said that foul play is not suspected as a cause of death.

La Giglia was arrested in Blanding on Saturday afternoon for violating a protective order and a pretrial release agreement. He was booked into the San Juan County jail and held overnight.

On Sunday morning, Torgerson said that La Giglia woke up and told officers that he felt ill.  After taking a shower and medication, La Giglia laid down. Later, officers found him unresponsive after a medical emergency.

He was pronounced dead after officers and emergency response crews attempted resuscitation efforts.

Torgerson offered his condolences to the family and friends of La Giglia.
