Stop for speeding in Monticello results in felony drug bust

Eleazar Armenta-Garcia, age 23, has been charged with two felonies and a misdemeanor after a San Juan County Sheriff’s Deputy found more than 14 pounds of illegal drugs in a car during a traffic stop in Monticello on November 18, 2021.

The charges include felony distributing or arranging to distribute nearly five pounds of pills believed to include fentanyl and another five pounds of a crystalized substance believed to be methamphetamine.

Armenta-Garcia is also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. 

A San Juan County deputy on patrol in Monticello pulled over a vehicle on Main Street traveling 46 miles per hour.

The vehicle was driven by a juvenile, with Armenta-Garcia as a passenger.

It was discovered that Armenta-Garcia had been charged with possession of fentanyl and methamphetamine on November 9 near Denver.

A search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of a backpack in the back seat that allegedly contained the drugs.

Armenta-Garcia is being held without bail.

San Juan County Sheriff Jason Torgerson praised the work of his deputies.
