Nine claim Sterling Scholar honors

Nine students in the San Juan School District brought home honors at the March 2 Sterling Scholars awards, including two first place winners.
Janessa Bowring, a senior at Monticello High School, was named the 2010 Sterling Scholar for Trade and Technical Education. Bowring, the daughter of Sherrill and Brian Bowring, plans to attend Utah Valley University, where she will study dental hygiene. Bowring has extensive experience in 4H and livestock, in addition to elk farming, woodworking and advanced automobile.
Kara Redd, a senior at San Juan High School, is the 2010 Sterling Scholar in Family and Consumer Science. Redd, the daughter of Jolin and Kedric Redd, plans to attend Southern Utah University, where she has already earned a Presidential scholarship.
A number of area students were included in the list of runners-up in each category. They include Natasha Bleak of San Juan High School in the English category, Michelle Fahey of San Juan High School in the Social Science category, Curtis Black from San Juan High School in the Music category, Drew Nielson from San Juan High School in the Business and Marketing category, Spencer Bradford of San Juan High School in the Mathematics category, and Heather Palmer of San Juan High School in the Foreign Language category.
Hope Johnson, of Monument Valley High School, was named a runner up in the Family and Consumer category.
Students from throughout southeastern Utah participate in the annual Sterling Scholar competition, with students competing in twelve categories. Winners and runners up are eligible for a host of scholarships are colleges throughout the region.
A total of 31 students from the San Juan School District participated this year, the largest total ever. The competitors include Deidra Jensen, the first Sterling Scholar candidate from Navajo Mountain High School.
San Juan High School served as the host of the event, which was held at the College of Eastern Utah in Price.
