We had a very interesting May
It snowed on the 22nd day
At least up here West of town
In our back yard it really came down
Several days we had rainstorms too
And in between the wind still blew.
I wonder now what June will bring
More or less of the same old thing?
It may rain and it may blow
But I really doubt that it will snow!
Then, again, what do I know?
Well, now of June we've had a sample
I hope it's not the months example!
On the fifth day the wind did blow
I'm sure it blew away the snow!
Everything loose just blew away
We had to find them the next day
I hear it blew trees onto the highway!
I hope it's blown away to stay.
But I guess that will be the day!
We send Happy Birthday wishes to our seniors celebrating in May. These friends include Ruth Randall, Lucille and Milt Compton, Pete Steele, Gene Pitts, Marilyn Rowley and Polly Langston.
On May 3, Patricia Jurasich proudly announced the birth of four grandbaby kittens. Mother, Patsy II is doing fine as are sweet things, Stuart, George, Patsy III and Gwendalynn.
Our president, George Jurasich, invited county commissioner Bruce Adams to dine and meet with us. We all thoroughly enjoyed his 50-minute presentation on county issues of health care, roads and water.
Bruce qualifies as an honorary senior jokester with his "spur of the moment" telling of the politician math joke. He's good on his feet. Thanks Bruce, for updating us.
On May 8, Dr. Reay came to present a health lecture on cancers, heart disease, arthritis, Alzheimer's, shingles, vaccinations, TB, Bell's Palsy and ingrown toe nails. We were a rapt audience for his two hour lecture so he rewarded us at the end with his best topic-sex!
Dr. Reay is a terrific lecturer and we hope he can make another presentation. Our sandal shoe doctor answered all our questions and gave excellent updates on new medicines and procedures.
He spoke to our packed senior center of 60 folks. We were especially happy to have 20 folks from Bluff join us.
We made an "exclusive" run to Cortez on the ninth. Having a fun trip were Irene Randolph, Veronica Montano, Cosmo Moccia, Pearl Lewis, Barbara, Martha, and Ann Beeson.
We became so uninhibited around Martha. It's her fault we "git 'er done" when hooking up our seat belts. This trip we drove right by the Playboy Bunny Bikini shop to Ann's "O my, my, my."
We enjoyed our potluck social on May 25.
Shirley Steffen lead 28 of us in a gospel sing-a-long to Alan Jackson's "Precious Memories" CD. JJ Steffen accompanied us on several numbers.
On May 10, we had a wonderful Mother's Day luncheon of roast beef, mashed potatoes, gravy and green beans with salad, cantaloupe and two desserts - chocolate raspberry torte and chocolate pecan pie! Our cooks really pamper us.
The Mother's Day program began with Shirley's reading of "Blessing Mother". Then Scottie Warren presented her hand crocheted leis to all the ladies. Our "Dancing Princess Irene" especially liked her key lime green creation. Ray Jarvis then sang 'M-O-T-H-E-R" for us. Martha distributed pink or peach rose buds to every lady. Our thanks to everyone who made the celebration memorable.
Lee Wilkins won both candy guessing games this month. She really was on a roll and did table #1 proud.
We're glad our snowbird, Art Steele, has returned. He drove up from Arizona with his new "chick magnet".
George Jurasich reports our visitor center had 1,300 visitors in two weeks with $1,500 in sales. Our town does seem busier with the tourist season beginning.
Krystal Bundy called for our first bingo on May 14. Bingo buds include Ann Beeson, Phylis Keith, Veronica Montano, Irene Randolph, Cindy Sallee, Pearl Lewis and Len and Scottie Warren.
At our second bingo, we enjoyed guests Josie Bundy, Heather Garner of Monticello and Marguarite Rogers now of Huntington, UT, but formerly of Monticello.
Jenny Montano's daughters, Clara of Tulsa, OK and Shirley Martinez also joined the regulars of Ann, Veronica, Irene, Phylis, Cindy, Krystal, Pearl, Vernon Warren and Len and Scottie. Scottie won blackout both sessions and chose porcelain clocks.
Our thanks to the many folks who donate bingo prizes, including Ann Beeson, Eloise Herron, Scottie Warren and Cindy Smith of Cindy's Seconds.
Wyman and Lou Redd's kitchen plaque "It's hard to be nostalgic when you can't remember anything" is true for many of us on many days.
Thomas Richardson visited with us and his folks Marvin and Karen Richardson.
It was good to see Keith and Mary Lou Hoggard around town and the cemetery for Memorial Day Weekend. I was happy to visit with Dave and Wanda MacPherson while they were back in town. I miss their red camper topped truck at the Navajo Trails Motel. That was always a reassuring fixture on Main Street. We wish them well in their move and future adventures.
We extend our sympathy to the family of Bessie Bailey. She will be remembered as a very nice lady. When I first came here she clerked at the Mercantile and was always so helpful and pleasant to me and her customers. She always addressed us by our first names.
"Hot blooded" Jackie Palmer is our new cook and all around center helper replacing Krystal Bundy. Come join us for lunch on June 21 to say goodbye to Krystal. We're going to miss our wonderful cook and her pink and blue denim overalls.
Remember our special Father's day Social Potluck at the baseball field pavilion park at 5:30 p.m. on June 22. Bring your favorite dish to accompany the barbeque provided by the center and grilled by John Himmelberger. This event will honor our fathers and celebrate Arlow and Sue Freestone's marriage. Shirley reminds everyone to bring their favorite poem for poetry readings during the evening.
