Shelby Seely

Candidate for San Juan County Assessor
My name is Shelby Seely. I am running for the San Juan County Assessor position.
I was born and raised here in San Juan County and I have lived here all my life. My wife, Adele, and I are now raising our family here. We love San Juan County and the great people here.
I have owned and operated several different businesses here in San Juan County for the past 20 years. I was in the construction business for 12 years and seven of those years I was a licensed, general contractor. I held my contractor’s license for a total of 15 years. As a contractor the job required me to be able to read blueprints and figure the materials, labor and square footage, and what the project would cost. I also learned to understand the appraisal process and how values of properties are determined. I know that my hands-on experience and knowledge I gained in the building business will be a great benefit to me as the assessor to be able to make a fair assessment of all different types of properties.
I currently own and operate several car washes and a Laundromat. At these businesses I work directly with the public on a daily basis. I also oversee 10 employees that help maintain a clean and friendly atmosphere at each location. Working with the public is not always easy and sometimes there are challenges. I take the time needed to work out the problems and I always treat my employees and customers with respect and honesty. I feel that my experience in these businesses will help me as the assessor when working with the people of San Juan County. My experience will also help me in working together with the office staff, that we will be able to provide a friendly and professional atmosphere.
I know that to have a stronger tax base we need to encourage business growth. Everything stems from business. With new businesses that start up or come to San Juan County they build new buildings and they bring personal property, which are both taxed. They create jobs for people who then are able to buy or build a house, which gets taxed. Maybe they are able to buy a new car because they have a job, and the car gets taxed. They shop and support local business and therefore pay county sales tax. Business helps to create a healthy tax base.
I know that people don’t really like to pay taxes but it makes it easier to pay taxes if you feel you are paying a fair tax. I will be an assessor for the people. I will work for the people of San Juan County to provide a fair tax assessment. I will fight against unrealistic state mandated taxes. My first responsibility is the people of San Juan County and their interests. My motto has always been to treat others as I would like to be treated. It is my goal to treat the people of San Juan County with fairness, honesty, respect and integrity.
I am excited to run for the assessor position as a republican. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me. 435-275-5881. Thank you
for your support and I would appreciate your vote!!
