Bronco matmen fourth at 2A duals

The San Juan High School wrestling team opened 2023 with a home dual against the rival Grand County Red Devils on Thursday, January 5. It was the first of two home duals scheduled this season.
The Broncos dominated in a 59-12 win in front of their home fans, winning nine of their 11 matches. Six San Juan wrestlers won by fall on the night: Grady Lacy, Chad Yellow, JD Palmer, Taydan Mark, Trace Bennett, and Chance Laws.
Parker Snyder won by technical fall 15-0, Callen Burke won by 7-0 decision, and Logan Keith won by 4-0 decision.
Following the home matches, San Juan traveled to Monroe Friday and Saturday, January 6-7 for 2A State Duals. The Broncos finished fourth at the event behind Millard, Beaver, and North Sevier.
San Juan scored the third-most team points with 379. Millard led with 684 and Beaver scored 440. They won six of nine duals on the weekend and were third in most pins in the least time.
Callen Burke continued his outstanding run on the 2022-23 campaign, going 7-0 on the weekend with seven wins by fall. He was four seconds shy of having the most pins in the least amount of time with eight pins in 15:14.
Burke tied for the lead in most team points scored with 54. Chad Yellow was 7-1 with five wins by fall, one by 21-10 major decision, and one by 12-10 decision.
Parker Snyder was 7-2 at the event with four wins by fall, an 18-1 technical fall, a 16-12 major decision, and a 5-3 decision.
Deklan Helquist won six of his eight matches in Monroe with all six of his wins by fall. Taydan Mark picked up five wins for the Broncos with one loss. Four of his wins were by fall and one was by 4-0 decision.
JD Palmer went 5-3 on the weekend with all five of his wins by fall. Grady Lacy and Taren Bayles collected three wins by fall apiece.
Lynnox Benn, Nicholas Joe, and Trace Bennett got two wins apiece, all by fall. Logan Keith got one win by fall and one by 10-5 decision. And Dailen Jones won one match by fall.
It’s a very busy week for the San Juan matmen. First, Callen Burke wrestled in the Ross Brunson Utah High School All-Star Duals in Orem on Tuesday, January 10, too late for our press deadline.
Burke entered the event with a perfect 24-0 record and was representing the 1A and 2A classifications.
The team will host Monument Valley and Whitehorse in their final home matches of the season on Wednesday, January 11. They travel to Coalville for a tournament at North Sevier Friday and Saturday, January 13-14.
