San Juan High All-State Track & Field

The San Juan Record is honoring 11 track and field athletes who represented San Juan County and finished third or better in their respective state competitions.
In the coming weeks the Deseret News will release its lists of All-State baseball and softball teams based exclusively on coaches’ votes from a list of nominated players from each team.
This week the Record is proud to present the All-State honorees for San Juan and Monticello track and field along with photos and comments from their coaches.
The Monticello All-State golf athletes will appear in the June 19 issue of the paper with the remaining honorees appearing in an upcoming issue.

Below are San Juan High Track & Field Athletes:

Jared Burke - San Juan Senior
2A Boys Shot Put State Champion
47 Feet, 8.25 Inches-Second in San Juan High History

Head Coach Sam Pemberton: “Jared is one of the hardest working athletes on the team. He put a lot of time in the weight room and was always the last one to leave the track. The best part about Jared is that he is very good at keeping things mentally in check. He knew if he had a bad throw it was okay because he knew the next one was going to be better. “Jared was very good at visualizing and pushing for goals. He wanted that state title and a big PR and with his hard work and dedication he was able to get there. Unfortunately this is our last year with him but we know with his perseverance he will succeed in life.”

Savannah Richmond - San Juan Junior
2A Girls Discus State Champion
111 Feet, 9 Inches-San Juan High School Record

Head Coach Sam Pemberton: “Savannah spent a lot of hours and went to some camps over the summer working for this year. She hit a little bit of a rut during the season but didn’t give up. Savannah was able to peak and perform her best at just the perfect time. “She not only broke the school record but brought home the state discus title as well. We know this will give her the confidence to go into her senior year, perfecting her technique so we can hopefully bring home another title before she graduates.”

Tripp Palmer - San Juan Sophomore
2A Boys high jump state champion
6 Feet, 8 Inches - San Juan High School Record

Head Coach Sam Pemberton: “Tripp is a pretty laid-back kid. He is super great at keeping his nerves in check and not letting the pressure get to his head. This year he was able to break the school record, take first at several meets, and win the state title in the high jump. “Luckily Tripp has two more years with the team and we would love to get him into more events. He is also great at the javelin and long jump but he has talked about taking on the hurdles next year. He is athletic, coachable, and a great asset to the team. We can’t wait to see what he does next year.”

Edward Lyman - San Juan Senior
2A boys 800-meter runner-up
1:55.88 - San Juan High School Record

Head Coach Sam Pemberton: “Edward is very successful in school, work, and sports. His dedication and work ethic showed in his races this year. Edward did everything he needed to do to make sure his body was healthy and in the best shape to perform at his best. “He took first in every individual race he ran at region and was a big part of getting our team to second place. Edward put his heart and soul into the 800 meter and although he just missed the state title we are still so proud of him and his performance throughout the year. “He works hard and is committed, smart, and loyal. Overall he is an amazing leader. We know with these traits Edward will go far in life and we will miss him. But we also can’t wait to watch him pursue new passions.”

2A Boys 4x100 Relay State Runner-ups
44.02 - Third in San Juan High History
Team members-
Seniors: Zack Conway, Brigham Nielson
Junior: Brody Bilbao
Sophomore: Jagger Nieves

Head Coach Sam Pemberton: “Our 4x100 team at state consisted of senior Zack Conway, senior Brigham Nielson, sophomore Jagger Nieves, and junior Brody Bilbao. This was Jagger and Brody’s first year running this race and though there were nerves they were able to do exactly what we needed them to do and did a great job. “They are both baseball players but we hope they enjoyed it enough to come back out next year and run for us. Zack and Brigham have been a vital part not only of our relay teams but to the whole team. They are both big scorers and will both be missed next year. They are hard-working and overall amazing athletes in every sport they play. “We as a coaching staff wish them and all our seniors all the luck in their next adventures. We already miss them all but can’t wait to see what next year brings. We have seen so much growth in the last few years and hope to continue to have more and more successful year like we did this year.”
