Monticello wrestling team wraps up regular season with busy week

The Monticello High School wrestlers wrapped up their regular season schedule this past week, hosting Whitehorse and Dolores on Wednesday, January 21.
Before the wrestling began, the Buckaroos honored two seniors, Landon Shumway and Evan Carpenter.
They traveled to Colorado on Friday and Saturday, January 23-24 to wrestle in a dual with Ignacio Friday and the Butch Melton Invitational on Saturday.
John Leber was the top placing Buckaroo at the tournament, earning a second-place medal after a hard-fought day.
Leber won by 16-0 technical fall in round one and followed with three wins by fall to earn a spot in the finals.
He was defeated in a 13-12 heartbreaker, but Leber did earn the fastest technical fall of the weekend in only 1:03.
Diego Cortez earned a third-place finish on the day, winning two matches by fall in the first period.
Arturo Gutierrez finished in fifth place, earning a 16-0 technical fall, a 17-5 major decision, and an exciting 4-1 sudden victory win in the final round.
Zamian Lopez earned a second-period win by fall and a sixth-place finish. Bryson Adair and Noah Dilts each had two first-period wins by fall.
Miles Coleman also earned a win by fall as each of those wrestlers finished seventh in their weight class. Also wrestling hard for the Buckaroos were Christian Hunt, Hayden Peterson, and JJ Atwood.
In their Friday night dual, Arturo Gutierrez won by 7-0 decision. Buckaroos Bryson Adair and Noah Dilts each won by first-period fall.
Diego Cortez, Miles Coleman, and JJ Atwood were defeated in their matches. Hayden Peterson, John Leber, and Zamian Lopez received forfeits.
Against Dolores Evan Carpenter, Diego Cortez, and Christian Hunt all earned wins by fall. Arturo Gutierrez earned an 11-3 major decision win, with Bryson Adair putting up a 14-2 major decision win.
John Leber was leading his match when his opponent had to default out with an injury. Hayden Peterson and Miles Coleman were defeated in their matches.
Against Whitehorse, Landon Shumway defeated Riley Benallie by 16-0 technical fall. John Leber also defeated Benallie by 15-0 technical fall.
Buckaroo JJ Atwood defeated Sanford Begay by 13-4 major decision and Noah Dilts defeated Jeremiah Chee by fall. Whitehorse’s Beau Holmes defeated Zamian Lopez 9-0.
This week, the Buckaroos will wrestle in the Divisional Tournament on Friday, January 30 at Panguitch High School. Wrestling begins at 11 a.m.
