San Juan girls tennis gets solid doubles play

The San Juan High School girls tennis team opened their season with three matches against Region 18 opponents August 21-24 before traveling to compete in the St. George Invitational on Friday and Saturday, August 28-29.
This past week the Lady Broncos hosted a match with Region 18 rival Grand County on Thursday, September 3.
San Juan was unable to score any points against Millard on August 21 and at South Sevier on August 24, but they broke into the win column in doubles play at Gunnison Valley also on August 24.
In that match the first doubles duo of Kellyn Davis and Sadie Black defeated Brooklyn Childs and Emma Lambert 6-1, 2-6, and 6-0.
In second doubles play Sariah Sweeten and Elsie Grover defeated Mariah Owens and Reegan Sorensen 6-0 and 6-0. Despite the victories, San Juan ultimately fell in the match to Gunnison Valley 3-2.
The Lady Broncos had a great weekend at the St. George Invitational on Friday and Saturday, August 28-29, scoring 22 points to finish fourth among the 16 teams in attendance.
Evony Sampson picked up three wins in first singles play, defeating Granger’s Nhu Nguyen in round one and round two, and Dixie’s Elyn Pack in round four.
Jordan Jones was victorious in second singles play over Granger’s Zahra Vardak in rounds one and two.
Sariah Sweeten and Elsie Grover defeated Abigail Hernandez and Marwa Sediqi of Granger in round one of second doubles play. They also won against Abigail Hernandez and Elizabeth Rosas Ramirez.
The girls returned home for their most recent match, hosting Grand County in Blanding on Thursday, September 3. San Juan battled hard, but fell 3-2 in the match.
Both wins came in doubles play. In first doubles it was Kellyn Davis and Sadie Black defeating Inga Wilcowske and Oakley Ricks 6-4 and 6-2.
In second doubles Sariah Sweeten and Elsie Grover beat Annabelle Knurbin and Lillie Stanfield 6-4 and 7-5. Through the first 47 matches of the season the Lady Broncos have collected nine wins.
Only one regular season match remains for San Juan. The team will host Region 18 foe Duchesne on Tuesday, September 15. The Region Championship is set for September 21 in Monroe with the State Championship coming up October 1-3 in Salt Lake City.
