Floods on Cottonwood Wash impact Bluff
Unprecedented rains continue to impact the Bluff community, with flooding from Cottonwood Wash on November 1 and 2.
Floods poured into the community from the north and finally breached the stream bed to the east of the stream. This sent waters flooding into a number of areas, including the fire station, library, post office, Turquoise Cafe, and Bluff Fort cabins.
The flooding eventually returned to the stream bed, leaving a number of cleanup jobs in its wake,
Some areas on the south side of the highway were spared, including the Recapture Lodge, according to Luanne Hook. The highway served as a dam to keep most of the overflow water on the north side of the road.
Several areas that were flooded in the past week by San Juan River water were not impacted by the Cottonwood Wash flood, including the Cadillac Ranch RV Park.
Jim Hook reports that rain in Bluff totaled 1.2 inches on November 1. There has been 8.29 inches of rain in Bluff since mid-September. On average, the community receives 7.76 of rain for an entire year.
