Kaboom!!

NORTHERN NEWS
by Maxine Deeter
Yep, it’s that time of year again – the epitome of redneck entertainment - the annual, bi-annual, no real schedule whenever we feel like it – La Sal dynamite shoot.
Even if you didn’t read the ad in this paper, local folks knew what was going on just from the kabooms that can be heard in town from West La Sal aka Rattlesnake Ranch.
Now these folks might be a little red in the neck, but most are crack shots.  Their skills were put to the test Saturday on what was just one more blustery, windy (I’m getting tired of this) spring day.
I believe, nevertheless, a good time was had by all.  More than a few participants hit their targets or there wouldn’t have been any Kabooms!
For the more refined among our citizenry, the next scheduled meeting of the La Sal Literary Guild will be held on June 26 at the local library at 7 p.m.  I’m quite sure there will be refreshments or I’ll eat my hat.
I’m not worried; our librarian always has some yummy goodies for our gatherings – much tastier than an old dirty hat.  This time around we did not settle on one particular book to read and discuss.  It was decided that we’d each pick a biography to read and then share thoughts with the group.
It really is a fun night and we are always ready to welcome new folks to the gathering.  It would be nice to have a few representatives of the male species.  I know they read as readily as the gals do.  Come on out and join the fun.
Speaking of our local library – and summer (almost) – the summer reading program is underway every Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m.  Kids of all ages are invited to come out and participate.  We have a really cool librarian and it promises to be a fun summer activity.  Coming soon are contests for the summer reading activity.
Here comes the bride!  Or, we’ll be saying that in a few more months.  Former La Salian Amanda Fuller came home to visit find a wedding venue.
These two are planning on tying the note later this summer at a scenic spot nearby La Sal.  No shortage of those!  You can catch up on the happy couple by checking out Facebook.
The train will soon be pulling out of the station for the annual trek to the Midwest lead by our own Ruthie Thayn.  Going along with her this year on her last trip (we’ll believe that when we see it!) is her new hubby, Lloyd, as well as other local folks.
They head to Nauvoo this time every year and have a great time touring all the historic sites.  Even though Ruthie swears every year that this will be her last (she puts a GREAT deal of effort and planning and time and expense and stress into these trips) she’s already got folks clambering to go with her next year.  I’m betting there will be a trip next year.
In what has become an annual and even several times a year event, many former La Salians and friends met this last week for a Reddirtretreat Quilting retreat.  This is hosted by a gal with roots in La Sal and firmly in San Juan County – Krista Redd Chadwick.
Now this endeavor falls firmly in between redneck doings and sophisticated fun.  It’s an old time country women’s pastime/necessity and a very popular present day art form.  It also includes food.  If you’ve ever been to any kind of a Redd shindig you know their reputation for great vittles!  Quilting and food – can’t beat that.
Most of the action took place in Paradox this year.  In years past it has been at the new Lodge (currently under renovation) in Old La Sal.  Next year the event is scheduled to begin June 11 and will be held at the La Sal Community Center. As for me and my house – next year I’m grabbing my sisters, and we are going to try and attend!  (Yea for retirement!!).
Do country folks really travel on their stomachs or is it just me?  (Don’t answer that!)
