Betty June (Smith) McDonald was born June 1, 1919, in Salt Lake City, UT to Charles Coulson and Manon (Lyman) Smith. She passed away in Blanding, UT, on March 15, 2014, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s.
Betty married Lawrence ‘Wesley’ McDonald, Jr. on September 2, 1936. They were the parents of three children: Ronald Fielding McDonald (Merle Jones), Douglas ‘Scott’ McDonald (Marlene Jones), and Laurianne McDonald (Kenneth L. Huffman).
Betty is preceded in death by her husband Wes, who died in 2004, and her son, Scott, who died in 1989, and by all seven of her brothers and sisters.
She is the grandmother of 11, great-grandmother of 31, and great-great-grandmother of 15.
Betty was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served actively her entire life, in any calling she was offered.
Her talents for music, dance and drama were put to excellent use. She was a ward, stake and regional dance director during the years when All-Church productions were popular.
She choreographed many of her own dance and drama programs, featuring her own dance students, which were performed in Monticello, UT.
She played the piano and organ in every ward she lived in and loved to lead choirs and congregational singing. She also wrote numerous plays for ward, stake and regional use, and was, for many years, active in theater, performing as a cast member in productions with the Promised Valley Playhouse and Hale Theater.
Betty also had a long and successful work career, culminating in many happy years as personal secretary to President Ezra Taft Benson. Serving in that capacity gave her great joy and happiness. She has left a legacy of faith and service for her posterity and will be greatly missed.
Visitation and funeral services for Betty will begin at 10 a.m. on March 19, 2014 at the Blanding Stake Center, 800 North 100 West.
Betty will be interred beside her husband, Wes, in the Monticello Cemetery.
