Blake Lyman Shumway
December 25, 1960 ~ November 28, 2019
Blake Lyman Shumway passed away peacefully on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28 in the comfort of his home, encircled about by his family, following a courageous battle with melanoma cancer.
Blake was born Christmas Day, December 25, 1960 in Salt Lake City to Bruce Lyman Shumway and Margaret Oa Jacobs Shumway. He was the oldest of eight children.
He grew up in Blanding and graduated from San Juan High School. He loved hunting, jeeping, and exploring San Juan County. He had many special friends from his youth. He had a great love for music.
One of his most memorable achievements was serving a mission to the London England Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1980-82. He created friendships there that have lasted to this day.
On July 10, 1987, Blake married his best friend, Catherine Johnson in the Oakland California Temple. Together they raised five children while living in Provo and Orem, UT.
Being a husband and father was Blake’s greatest joy. Earlier this year Blake became a grandfather to baby Harrison – such a blessing in his life.
Blake received his bachelor’s degree in finance from Brigham Young University and also completed a master of business administration degree from the University of Phoenix.
Professionally, Blake worked mostly for Novell and Symantec and spent a decade running his own marketing company. He traveled around the world, orchestrating events for various technology companies, and gained a love for new places and new cultures.
Blake was the most happy when he was serving those around him. He faithfully served in several Bishoprics, in the High Council, and with the youth.
Family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues alike describe Blake as being loyal, selfless, happy, kind, and Christ-like. Also, Blake will forever be remembered for his generosity, his goodness, and his grin.
Blake is survived by his wife, Catherine, and his children: sons Justin (Emily, Parker) Cassidy, Chariton, Mckay (soon-to-be Cassidy), and daughter Allyse and his sweet grandson, Harrison. He is also survived by his parents, siblings, and numerous extended family members as well as his beloved dog, Lizzie.
Funeral services were held on Saturday December 7, 2019 at the Orem Sharon Stake Center. Interment is in the Orem City Cemetery.
