Don F. Black

April 13, 1932 ~ November 16, 2010
Don Black, son of Hyrum and Hester Black, passed away peacefully at his home on November 16 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his extended family and friends.
Don was born in Blanding, UT, to Hester and Hyrum Black on April 13, 1932. He was raised in a loving home with six siblings (Cherril Stevenson, Ken Black, Calvin Black, Carol Black, Helen Walker, and Marilyn Lyman). He remained very close to them and enjoyed traveling and frequent visits.
He was a hardworking and enthusiastic entrepreneur. His wide range of experience included driving ore trucks, mining, farming, starting and growing several successful businesses, and then pursuing his passion: teaching.
During his 25 years of teaching in the business department of Utah Valley University thousands of students benefited from his ability to illustrate business concepts with many personal examples and often funny stories.
Although he and his wife traveled throughout the world, there was no place he cherished more than the beautiful landscapes of southern Utah. He passionately explored and hiked all over the area, including every canyon from Rainbow Bridge to Dark Canyon when his family explored the rising waters of Lake Powell.
Don served in Germany during the Korean War and held top security clearances at the Joint U.S. European Command Headquarters.
Don was a patriot and a life-long learner. He embraced adventure, loved to laugh, and was never happier than when he was surrounded by loved ones, including seven foreign exchange sons.
Don is survived by his wife, Wanda; daughters Jeanne (David) von Zastrow, Joni (Kevin) Graves and Donna (Darryl) Davis; ten grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by daughter Heidi Ivie, and great-grandson Kolby Weske.
A memorial service was held on November 18 in Provo, UT. Don was laid to rest at the Blanding Cemetery on Saturday, November 20.
