Doris Ida Child Black

December 3, 1926 ~ January 20, 2009

Doris Ida Child Black, 82, of Orem, passed away January 20, 2009 at her home. She was born December 3, 1926 at Bluewater, NM to William Warren Child and Doris Emma Teitjen Child.

She spent her early years in Bluewater and was educated in Grants, NM and Redwood City, CA. She attended many colleges, including Contra Costa Jr. College and graduated with a B.A. from San Francisco State College.

She married Devon Morley Black on December 19, 1947 in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She was a homemaker and had worked as a school teacher, sold real estate and worked as a counselor.

She was a Utah State Poet prizewinner and had received other recognitions for her poetry. She also wrote many short stories about her family.

Her hobbies and interests included painting, creative writing and singing.

She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had served as a teacher in many of the auxiliaries and seminary. Above all else, Doris loved the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

She is survived by her husband of Orem; children: Shari (Leonard) Phister of Martinez, CA, Diana (Larry) Ballard of Salem, UT, Burke (Chris) Black of South Jordan, UT, William (Carolyn) Black of Benicia, CA, Russel Black of Orem, UT, Betty (Dain) Fackrell of Taylorsville, UT, Suzanne (Ray) Schmitt of Orem, UT; 24 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and a sister: LaRee (Child) Nooner of Alpine, UT.

She is preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services were held January 24, 2009 in Orem. Burial was in the Orem City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the LDS Church Perpetual Education Fund.
