Edith Kraft Lyman

March 12, 1914 ~ January 3, 2008

Edith Kraft Lyman was born at Claryville (now Alexandria) Kentucky, the seventh of nine children born to Christian and Emma Vilena Wilhemina Brickler Kraft.

Edith is the last to pass beyond the veil of this large family ,including her parents and her five brothers and three sisters.

While serving on his mission to the Southern States in the early 1930’s, Karl Robison Lyman met and was instrumental in the spiritual growth of the Kraft family in Claryville, Kentucky.

After he returned to his home in Blanding, Utah he started corresponding with Edith, one of the pretty Kraft girls. After a two-year letter-writing courtship, they were married in the Salt Lake City Temple on October 4, 1934.

Karl passed away on October 1, 1998, just three days before they would celebrate their 64th anniversary.

From this marriage came five children: Clayson Wells Lyman (Pat) of Orem, UT; Joyce Kraft Hughes (Everett) of Claremont, CA; Terry Kraft Lyman (deceased); Mark Kraft Lyman (deceased); and Chad Kraft Lyman (Louise) of Orem.

Her experiences in drama began while she was a young lady attending college in Cincinnati, OH. She participated in many three-act plays before large audiences, usually in a leading role. After she was married, she continued to participate in many plays, always sang in one or more choirs, choruses or trios highlighted by singing with a group of 16 ladies who performed at many musicals, funerals, banquets, civic and church functions.

Edith and Karl spent their first three years in Blanding, Utah, then they moved to Monticello, Utah where they raised their family.

One of her most cherished church assignments was advisor to the young women in the Monticello Ward – these young ladies have always been a treasure and wonderful memory to Edith.

She also served in many church assignments, including Stake Relief Society, MIA, Primary and Sunday School Boards.

In 1960, Karl and Edith were called to preside over the newly formed Florida Mission, which was split off from the old Southern States Mission.

The mission included parts of Georgia and Alabama, the State of Florida and the Caribbean Islands.

Edith cherishes the association and friendship of the many missionaries with whom they served.

Following the mission, Karl and Edith served as tour guides on Temple Square for ten years and worked in the Provo Temple and as Board Members for the Promised Valley Play House.

Edith is survived by three of her five children, 10 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband and two sons, her parents and her siblings.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 10, 2008, at 11 a.m., at the Stonewood Stake Center, 450 South 100 West, Orem, Utah. There will be no public viewing.

Interment will be at the Monticello City Cemetery on Friday, January 11, at 1 p.m., where a brief graveside service will be held.
