Elizabeth Hatch Miller

September 17, 1943 ~ August 25, 2016
Elizabeth Hatch Miller (“Liz”), aged 72, passed away on August 25, 2016 in Gilbert, AZ.
Liz was born on September 17, 1943 in Colonia Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico to Ernest Seville Hatch and Fanny Bluth Hatch.
As a teenager she played for the local high school basketball team that won a number of Mexico national championships. She loved growing up in the Mormon Colonies.
It was with much reluctance that she left Mexico after graduating high school in 1961 to study at Brigham Young University.
While in a BYU dance class she met someone she described as “quite possibly the worst dancer in the whole class” – Gerald Orvil Miller (“Jerry”), a quiet but humorous young man.
In 1967, she and Jerry graduated from BYU and were married in the Mesa Arizona Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
After living for several years in Cortez, CO, Jerry, Liz and their four children moved to Monticello, UT in 1980. They fell in love with the canyon country and the community of Monticello, making it their home for 32 years.
Liz taught at Monticello High School for 20 years, gaining the grudging respect of her students through her enthusiasm and passion for English literature.
In 2012, she served a mission with Jerry in the Mexico City LDS Temple, where they had many wonderful experiences. Upon returning from Mexico, she and Jerry relocated to Gilbert, AZ.
In June of this year, Liz was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer. She passed away a few weeks later.
Throughout her ordeal with cancer, Liz remained sunny and upbeat. She found peace and serenity through her faith in the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ.
She died with her beloved husband by her side. She is survived by her husband, Jerry; children, Brandt (Julie) Miller, Candacy (Christian) Syphus, Logan (Berklee) Miller, and Kiffany (Josue) Javier; and her 11 grandchildren.
