Francis David (Bud) Nielson

August 12, 1923 ~ September 22, 2009

Francis David (Bud) Nielson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away Tuesday, September 22, 2009.

He was born August 12, 1923 in Nephi, UT, to Francis Shirley Nielson and Marian Elizabeth Park Nielson.

He married Velda Johnson on November 12, 1942, in the Manti LDS Temple.

Bud grew up in Blanding, UT, and in his youth, Bud worked as a cook for his Dad out on the range.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II, and was trained as a radio operator.

He spent several years working in the uranium mines in southeastern Utah.

He was elected to the Blanding City Council effective January 1, 1956, but resigned a few months later when he was asked to take the position of City Administrator, a position he held until he retired in 1986.

Bud was active in the LDS Church, having served as Sunday School Superintendent, Stake missionary, High Priest Group Leader, Stake Genealogist, Counselor in several bishoprics, and as a Bishop.

His greatest loves were his wife, his children and extended family members, the Church, the community of Blanding, his horses, playing baseball and basketball, singing, and hard work.

Bud is survived by his wife Velda; children, Sylvia Lusty, Suzanne (Steve) Anderberg, David Boyd (Vicky) Nielson, Michelle (Mario) Cintron; 24 grandchildren, 24 ½ great grandchildren; brother Hans Joseph (Belva) Nielson, sisters-in-law Sandra Nielson, Clea Johnson and Flora (Bill) Graham; and brother-in-law Don (Claire) Northern.

He is preceded in death by a son, Francis Lyle Nielson; son-in-law Evan R Lusty; sister Merlan (Keith) Jones; brother Shirley Park Nielson; brothers-in-law Lyle Johnson and Roy (Klea) Johnson.

Funeral services were held at the Blanding North Chapel (255 East 200 North) on September 28, 2009. The viewing was held that morning.
