Gene Young Hacking

August 23, 1920 ~ January 6, 2014
Gene Young Hacking peacefully passed away on January 6, 2014, at the home of her son, Tom, in Salt Lake City, UT.
She was born in Blanding, UT on August 23, 1920 to William R. and Neta Washburn Young.
She is the oldest of eight children. Her brothers, Richard, Harold, and Kendall, along with her sister Dorothy, all preceed her in death. She is the last, even though she is the oldest child, to die.
Gene attended schools in Blanding and later graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Art. It was at BYU that Gene met her future husband, LaVerle Thomas Hacking, from Cedar Fort, UT. They were married in July of 1943.
They were living in Cedar Fort when LaVerle suddenly passed away. After LaVerle’s death in 1948, Gene returned to Blanding where she raised her three children, Tom, Anna Marie, & Jim.
She worked at various jobs, including 23 years as Librarian at the Blanding branch of the San Juan County Library. She retired in 1985.
Gene enjoyed gardening, reading, crocheting, cross-stitch, embroidery, quilting, and doing family history work. She diligently kept a journal her entire life and served faithfully in her church callings as a member of the LDS church.
She is survived by her three children, Tom (Ruby) Hacking of Salt Lake City, UT; Anna Marie (Bryant) Figgins of St.George, UT; and Jim (Diane) Hacking of Lindon, UT. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Tim, Nicole, Marcii, Megan, Shaun, Stefan, Dustin, Lisa, Sybil, John, and Sarah; their spouses; and many great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 10 in South Jordan, UT. Internment at the Cedar Valley Utah Cemetery.
