Kathleen Stewart (Halls) January 23, 1943 ~ June 24, 2025
Kathleen “Kathy” Stewart (Halls) passed away quickly and peacefully in Monticello, UT on June 24, 2025 after suffering a stroke.
Kathy was born on January 23, 1943 in Meeker, CO to Margaret Bronson of Monticello and Frank Schrafel of Minnesota. Her father was tragically killed in a mining accident in Telluride, CO when she was an infant.
Kathy’s mother, Margaret, returned to Monticello where she later married Devere Halls, who lovingly raised Kathy as his own.
Kathy was raised in Monticello alongside her three brothers – Gary, Craig, and Max Halls. She had fond memories of her youth spent on the family cattle ranch, helping move cattle from Dry Valley up to Monticello, and later from Monticello to the summer range in Colorado.
She graduated from Monticello High School in 1961 and moved to Salt Lake City to attend business college. Her training there led to a job at a law office, where she worked for the 38th woman (Irene War) ever admitted to the Utah State Bar.
While living in Salt Lake, Kathy met James (Jim) Stewart of Vernal, UT. They married February 5, 1966 and had two sons: Roy (1969-2024) and Scott.
The family lived in Salt Lake City until Jim took a job operating heavy equipment in Pocatello, ID. Kathy cared for their sons at home and later worked at the local school in Pocatello.
Once the boys were old enough, she began working for the FBI, using her legal assistant experience to transcribe interviews and wiretaps.
The family later relocated to Las Vegas for a brief period before Kathy and Jim moved to Wickenburg, AZ to open a hardware store in 1988 (Stewart Hardware).
They operated the store together until their retirement in 2001. After retiring they built a home in Monticello where they spent their summers until Jim’s passing in 2010.
Kathy continued to return to Monticello every summer to enjoy the cooler weather and spend time with her brothers and their wives – Donna, Deborah, and Tami – as well as many extended family members and longtime friends.
She always looked forward to her summers in her hometown of Monticello and being close to her extended family during this time.
Kathy was deeply involved in community service in Wickenburg. She volunteered at the local hospital and was active in the Soroptimist Club.
She helped found and support The Boyd Ranch, a community equestrian and nature park with a program for children called the “Kids Club”, which promotes/encourages getting kids away from the computer and TV outside enjoying nature at the Boyd Ranch.
Kathy is survived by her brothers Gary (Donna), Craig (Deborah), and Max (Tami); son Scott (Cheri); grandchildren Tifanie (Mike) and Adam (Kaitlyn); and her great-grandchildren Brooke and Carter.
Kathy leaves behind a legacy of resilience, warmth, and quiet service to others. Her life is a testament to the strength of family, community, and purpose.
A memorial service will be held July 12 at 11 a.m. at San Juan Community Church, 217 South 200 East in Monticello.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the kids club at The Boyd Ranch, PO Box 128, Wickenburg, AZ 85390.
