Linda "Cookie" Bailey Shiew

August 11, 1943~July 16, 2007

Linda “Cookie” Bailey Shiew passed away on July 16, 2007 at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo, Utah, due to injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

Cookie was born on August 11, 1943 in Moab, Utah to June and Reed Bailey. She spent her childhood in southeastern Utah, but her favorite place while growing up was White Canyon. She moved with her family to Monticello in 1956, and that was her home for the majority of her life.

Cookie was always very active, and as a young woman she developed a talent for sports, with softball being her favorite. Her interest in sports grew into a love of all competitive games, including cribbage, marbles, Liverpool rummy and water fighting.

Cookie loved being outdoors in San Juan County more than anything else. She enjoyed camping, fishing, hiking, swimming, arrowhead hunting, rock collecting and taking her dogs for walks around Loyd’s Lake.

Cookie became a single parent to four children in 1974, and worked as a waitress, cook, hairdresser, flagger and surveyor before she chose a career as a truck driver. She loved being involved in the creation of new roads, and she was especially proud of her involvement in building Recapture Dam.

Cookie was a talented artist. She made wind chimes and macrame potted-plant holders, and anyone lucky enough to have one of her scenic “sand paintings in a jar” or miniature Indian ruins will treasure them forever.

Cookie is survived by her daughter Kerrie (Mark) Hill of Riverton, Utah, son Reagan Shiew of Midvale, Utah, daughter Kasey (Joe) Harris of Monticello, Utah, sister Jackie (Pete) Steele of Monticello, Utah, sister Karen Chantry of West Valley, Utah, 11 beloved grandchildren, four nieces and one nephew. She is preceded in death by her parents and her daughter Letha (Loran) St. Clair of Monticello, Utah.

A memorial service was held at the Monticello LDS Stake Center on July 20, 2007. Her remains were cremated, and as per her wishes, her family and friends will spread her ashes at her many favorite locations in the area.
