Lowry Singleton Seely

August 16, 1916 ~ August 20, 2008

Lowry Singleton Seely passed away August 20, 2008. He was born April 16, 1916 in Castle Dale, UT, a son of Elva Singleton and David Randolph Seely.

Lowry grew up milkin*g cows, doing chores, and riding horses. When he was six, the family ranching operation moved from Emery County to the west end of the Bookcliffs at Green River – some of the toughest countries on earth.

This meant a twice-yearly horseback ride from the summer operation to the home place in Castle Dale - a distance of about 60 miles. For fun, he used to sneak out into the desert and rope wild horses, but only when his dad wasn’t looking.

He was active in sports in high school, playing football and basketball. His senior year, the basketball team went to the state championships in Salt Lake City.

After graduation from Central High School in 1934, Lowry spent summers on the ranch in Colorado. At Utah State University, he studied animal husbandry and range management.

At Utah State, he met and courted Gwen Nielson – finally convincing her to marry him. They were sealed in the Logan Temple on December 21, 1937. They were blessed with three children: Sonya, David and Geddes.

After graduating in 1938, he followed his passion for livestock and went into the ranching business. He worked the family ranch until he purchased the Wellsweep Ranch in 1958 in the Williams Fork area.

He quickly became well known for raising outstanding cattle and horses. The family showed cattle and horses in national shows, winning several championships.

Along with ranching, he ran a successful hunting and outfitting business with his son, David, well into his 80s.

He developed lifelong friendships. He left a legacy in his commitment to family, dedication to hard work, joy for life and friends. He never forgot his church duties, serving as bishop for many years and on the High Council.

Lowry is survived by his wife, Gwen Seely, daughter Sonya Redd, sons David Seely and Geddes Seely, 13 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.
