Marcia Lyman Hunt Shores

May 3,1941 ~ September 23, 2019

Marcia Lyman Hunt Shores passed away on September 23, 2019 at age 78. She battled acute myeloid leukemia (AML) for over a year, with grace, courage and optimism.

She was born May 3, 1941 in Moab to Ray Finlinson Lyman and Maggie Johnson Lyman. She was raised in Blanding.

Marcia was fun, creative, kind, smart, and resourceful.

She left school in tenth grade but earned her GED as an adult. She studied at the U of U in Salt Lake City, then proudly graduated from Trivecca Nazarene College in Nashville, TN with a bachelors degree at the age of 44.

Marcia married Curtis Hunt on August 3, 1957. They raised four outstanding children but later divorced.

Marcia met her sweetheart, Dan Shores, while living in Nashville in 1985. They married in Las Vegas, NV November 26, 1999.

Marcia’s children brought her joy and adventure. Daughter Valerie moved to Nashville in 1982. Marcia joined her there in 1985.

Marcia met country music stars, attended TV tapings, and went on the road as “Mama Hussy” with Valerie’s recording and touring group, “Ethel and The Shameless Hussies.”

Son Mitch and his progeny made her a grandmother at age 36, a great-grandmother at age 52, then a great-great-grandmother at 76.

She was pleased when two sons, Scott and Darren, both fell in love with delightful women from Chengdu, China and graced her with lovely Chinese daughters-in-law. She loved her trips to China, her extended family there, and the interesting people she met.

She also traveled to South Korea with son Scott, his wife Carol, and their daughter Lucy.

Son Darren was a talented athlete.  She proudly cheered him on at many sporting events.  They had fun times hiking out in the hills around Blanding.

Marcia worked at Brighton High School, then Whitmore Library in Cottonwood Heights, UT, where she drove the bookmobile to serve outlying areas. She also at Old Hickory Library in Nashville.

She returned home to Blanding in 1992 and joined the staff at San Juan Mental Heath, enjoying her coworkers and clients at Day Treatment until she retired.

After retirement, Marcia volunteered for several years as a docent at the Bluff Fort in Bluff.  She was proud of her pioneer heritage and had great fun sharing the Hole In the Rock Expedition stories with visitors from around the world.

Marcia’s passion was hiking the hills and canyons of San Juan County. She and her treasured friend, (partner in crime) Sallee Shumway, ventured out every chance they could.

Marcia kept her fingers busy with crochet projects during most of her down time. She loved to create and give away her beautiful shawls.

Marcia is preceded in death by her parents Ray and Maggie Lyman and brother Dale Lyman.

She is survived by her husband Dan Shores; adored sister Kathryn Shumway; attentive brothers Harold Lyman, Raymond Lyman, Austin Lyman, and Layne Lyman; children Mitchell (Selena) Hunt, Valerie (favorite son-in-law) Alan Brown, Darren (Luoya) Hunt, Scott (Carol) Hunt, Tamara Shores, Dana Shores Jr.; 20 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; plus countless wonderful nieces, nephews, and cousins.
